It is not uncommon for people to make drastic life changing decision when the hit the age of 40, the same seems to be true about the Internet as well. For many years, countries that uses non Latin based script such as Arabic, Chinese and others have argued that they should be able to have web address in their language. The body responsible for domain naming, ICANN has finally agreed to give allow this to go ahead. This means very soon you will see web addresses in Arabic, Korean, Japanese if all goes as expected in Seoul where International Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers.

Rod Beckstrom, ICANN’s president said if the proposed changes are approved, by middle of 2010, we could start expecting to see domain name not based on Latin characters on the Internet. Application for the new non-Latin domain names is expected to start coming thick and fast once the proposal is approved at this weeks ICANN meeting. This proposal should have be put in place long before now when you consider the fact that more than half of the world estimated 1.6 Billion Internet users use non Latin based character.
