$13 million – the right price for sex.com domain name

There are many valuable domain names available on the Internet, but as the phrase « sex sells » shows, it was an obvious thing that sex.com domain name to be sold for an incredible sum. This was sold later these days for $13 million on an auction, after its ex-owner Escom LLC faced bankruptcy.
The auction started in July 20 and ended after a St Vincent registered company – Clover Holdings – placed the highest bid for the domain. As for the most valuable domains, this one was also sold through Sedo.com, one of the biggest marketplaces for domain names. The final decision will be taken by the court in five days, on 27 October.
Though the deal is not approved yet by the bankruptcy court, it seems that we have a new winner and this is Clover Holdings. There are not many information about what this company plans to do with the domain name or how to develop it, one thing is sure though : it is one of the most lucrative domain names for all its former owners.
This is not the highest price for a domain name, it is not even the highest price for sex.com either while Escom paid $14 million in 2006 to grab it. In 1999, QuinStreet, a well known marketing firm, paid $16 million for insure.com, the highest amount of money ever paid fo a domain name.
Gary Kremen was the original owner of sex.com, the same person that founded one of the most popular dating site on the Internet, Match.com. He registered the domain in 1994 and sold it 4 years ago to the company that now is under bankruptcy.
Will this domain name be sold in the future for more money, or less ? This is a question nobody can answer, it all depends on how its new owner plans to develop it and what profit will it bring after is being launched.
